The Faculty of The Built Environment consists of the following Departments: - Architecture, Landscape Architecture and Urban Design and Quantity Surveying. 

The post of Dean is a full-time high-level position to be held for a period of four years in the first instance. The Dean reports to the Vice-Chancellor and is a member of the Senior Administrative team of the University. The Dean is the Chief Academic, Administrative and Financial Officer of the Faculty, and will be responsible for research and academic leadership; administration and management; community outreach; income generation and financial management of the Faculty. A proven track record of achievement in the above areas is desirable.

The ideal candidate should possess academic and/ or professional qualifications from an approved institution, preferably to the level of a Doctorate Degree in one of the disciplines offered by the Faculty and be at least at Senior Lecturer Grade (or have credentials that would qualify him/her for appointment at that level). In addition, the candidate should have the following attributes:- a proven track record of successful academic and administrative leadership skills; demonstrated ability to work in a team;  proven commitment to academic excellence and collaboration across disciplines; ability to work collaboratively and communicate effectively with students, academic staff, administrators and external constituencies; demonstrated ability to forge partnerships and garner support from campus, business and community constituencies leading to industrial attachment and employment opportunities for students and generating external funding for research and teaching.


Institute of Development Studies – Faculty of Commerce           

The post of Director is a full-time high level position to be held for a period of three (3) years in the first instance. The Director reports to the Vice-Chancellor through the Executive Dean of Commerce and is a member of the Senior Administrative team of the University. The Director is responsible for positioning of the Institute in the dynamic environment through a well-designed and thought out Strategic Plan that addresses various changing patterns of modern development.Applicants must have a PhD Degree in Social Sciences specialising in Development Studies or an equivalent development related field, plus at least 5 years’ experience of teaching or research in a recognised institution. Post-Doctoral research experience is a distinct advantage. The successful candidate must have experience of demonstrated involvement and understanding of development and / or consulting practice at managerial/senior level; as well as a passion for research and scholarship, demonstrated by a strong track record of scholarly research output. In addition, he/she must be able to lead and promote a vibrant research culture and Partnerships within the Institute. Exposure to leadership in a multi-disciplinary academic research institution would be an advantage.

The incumbent will have the overall responsibility for the management of the Institute and directing its programmes.  He/she will be required to achieve specific performance goals within this position. 

Key Performance Areas / Duties and Responsibilities:

The position specifically requires the successful applicant to have the capacity to:-  

  • Spearhead the research mandate and development thrust of the Institute,
  •  Design, develop and manage the Institute’s programmes,
  •  Conceptualise and formulate policies in terms of the University’s Strategic Plan,
  •  Develop strategic plans and oversee their implementation,
  •  Forge and maintain university-community linkages that champion local economic and social development through research and development,
  •  Lead and guide high level, multi-disciplinary academic and professional staff,
  • Fund-raise and manage resources prudently; and be able to mobilise international resources and research grants for the Institute 


Department of Publishing Studies – Faculty of Communication and Information Science 

Applicants must have at least a PhD Degree in Publishing, Communication and Information Science or other fields and be able to teach and research in areas specific to Publishing.  The successful applicant will also be expected to guide and supervise students at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.  Practical experience in creative writing, editing graphic design and electronic publishing would be an added advantage.


Department of Accounting – Faculty of Commerce 

Applicants must have the following:- 

  • A PhD in Accounting, Finance, Business Management, Business related studies or Information Systems.
  •  A Masters in Accounting and Finance.  
  • A good Honours Degree in Accounting or Information Systems passed with at least 2.1 degree class or better.
  •  Industrial working experience.
  •  A professional qualification such as CA, CPA and ACCA degree will be an added advantage.  

The applicants must be able to teach at least two of the following courses:- 

  •  Advanced Financial Accounting
  •  Advanced Auditing
  •  Advanced Taxation
  •  Management Accounting
  •  Information Systems. 


Department of Applied Chemistry – Faculty of Applied Sciences 

Applicants must hold at least a Master’s Degree, but preferably a PhD in Physical Chemistry and be experienced in teaching Chemistry at tertiary level.  The successful candidate will be expected to teach Physical Chemistry at undergraduate Honours level as well as develop a research and publication record within their area of specialisation.  In addition to this, he/she will be expected to develop, update and review Physical Chemistry courses in order to keep up with changes in technology; as well as to supervise Final-year Projects and Industrial Attachment.


Department of Chemical Engineering – Faculty of Industrial Technology 

The department seeks an enthusiastic, high quality candidate for lectureship in Chemical Engineering. Applicants must have a BEng or BSc (Hons) or equivalent in Chemical Engineering/Process Engineering and hold a PhD in Chemical Engineering/Process Engineering.  Evidence of scholarly contribution is required in the form of at least two (2) peer reviewed journal articles. The incumbent will be expected to undertake teaching in both the Undergraduate and Masters Programmes.  He/She is also expected to have strong research skills which will enhance and complement the department’s existing research strength.  While all areas of chemical engineering research will be considered, preference will be given to candidates whose research is in the areas of minerals processing.
