The Programme seeks to develop in students the competence to produce high quality work in technical and engineering subjects offered in schools and tertiary institutions in the country, as well as to teach up to high school and college level in these learning areas
Applicants must have at least a National Diploma or its equivalent in their chose subject or skills area.
In addition, applicants must have an acceptable qualification in teaching or training.
Applicants must be employed as teachers or trainers at the time of applying
The three-year block-release programme consists of a prescribed number of taught modules in the specialist subjects and in education, work-based experience integrated into the second year of study, and a final year project.
Applicants who do not meet the basic entry requirements may be required to study prescribed bridging modules.

 Assessment

All modules are assessed through coursework and examination unless specified otherwise in the module synopses.
All candidates shall study prescribed common education and professional modules under the Department of Mathematics, Science and Technology Education.
 
Short Modules (Engineering and Technology)
An array of selected modules in engineering and technology shall be offered to both undergraduate and postgraduate candidates (See Section 3.3 ahead). To students enrolled for normal degree programmes, these shall be offered as optional modules. To industry and working personnel they shall be offered for non-degree purposes, for certificates, and for diploma awards depending on the number and combinations of modules taken. The modules shall be selected and produced in collaboration with science and engineering faculties, as well as relevant industry bodies and companies. They shall cover contemporary issues in engineering and technology, touching on, among others, such broad topics as:

An introduction to static and dynamic behaviour of the major structural systems applied in architecture. An examination of the monolithic wall, post-and- lintel and multistory framed construction, tunnels, vaults and domes, suspended, catenary and tensile structures, etc to enable students to develop their understanding of the structural principles that underlay their physical structural forms. The aim of the module is to develop analytical capabilities in relating the sizes of components to their physical characteristics of structural elements and the analysis of forces acting on them.

Enhancement of Auto CAD application in Civil Engineering drawings e.g. detailing, labelling and dimensioning.

The infrastructural services required in buildings including water supply and distribution, hot water supply and distribution of solid waste and rain water drainage, sewage treatment and its disposal, refuse removal and disposal, electrical and telephone services for buildings, ventilation, air conditioning and acoustics.

Thinking skills, creativity and the expression and provides a practical introduction to the use of computers in design, various electronic graphic representation used in design, and functionality and the structure of modern CAD systems. Students are then given theoretical and practical introduction to computer based and drawing tools and techniques through lectures and hands on instruction and demonstration.

PTE4256               Transport Engineering and Plan                                 

Role of traffic and transport engineering- its scope and function. Highway surveys. Geometric design of highway, design of intersections, design of signals, markings and signs. Sight distances Horizontal and vertical curves. Construction and maintenance of low cost roads, stabilize roads, bituminous roads.

 

PTE4258               Hydraulic Design                                             

Overview of hydraulic structures: conveyance structures, flow measuring devices, control structures etc. Design of municipal drainage system. Methods of analysis and hydraulic design: conveyance structures, water distribution systems etc.  Storage systems: ground and overhead reservoirs and impoundments.

 

PTE4259               Geotechnical Engineering II                                          

Geo-structural mechanisms and the critical state soil model. Bearing capacity and design of foundations. Settlement of foundations and analysis. Geotechnical process for ground improvement. Construction methods, dams and embankments. Soil improvement grouting vertical drains, geosynthesis, soil reinforcement. Filtration, separation and erosion control. Drainage in plane.
