Biography

Clifford Mhlophe joined NUST in August 1994 after earlier stints in the Fiscal Policy Division of the Ministry of Finance, Economic Planning & Development, a financial corporation specializing in small-holder agricultural lending, as well as the then, largest agro-industrial processing concern in the country, working in the area of corporate strategy. Mr Mhlope has been at the forefront of the development of new programmes in the department and the university.

Research interests

Clifford’s area of special interest is in the practice of banking, especially cost-efficient lending systems for smallholder farmers and strategy creation and implementation. The 4@thefore lending strategy was a resounding success in the then ADAF (Agricultural Assistance Fund) of Agribank was a resounding success in the immediate post-land reform period of the country. That experience was leveraged on in creating a Kellogg Foundation community lending scheme for the Chimanimani District. Current research interests are in smallholder agricultural productivity and the potential for creating alternative measures for economic performance in rural communities.

 

Community Service/Engagement

He is currently in the Board of Trustees of Zimbabwe’s sole wholesale financing institution for MFIs.
