THE DEPARTMENT OF SCIENCE, MATHEMATICS AND TECHNOLOGY EDUCATION
Welcome to the Department of Science Mathematics and Technology Education (SMTE). This department is housed in the Faculty of Science and Technology Education at the National University of Science Technology (NUST). The Department was inaugurated in August 2014 with a staff complement of five lecturers, one teaching assistant, and a student intake of 74. It has grown into one of formidable departments within two years of its inception. The department offers a Bachelor of Science Honours Degree in Education in the following subjects: Accounting and Business Studies, Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Mathematics and Physics. Additionally, the department offers a Postgraduate Diploma in Science and Technology Education (PGDSTE) with a duration of eighteen months and a Master of Science Education in the following subjects: Accounting and Business Studies, Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Mathematics, and Physics. Our degree programmes are tailored to meet the 5.0 model of Education whose end products are the production of goods and services and industrialisation. The Department aims to produce quality STEM teachers who can Think in other Terms and service their communities diligently and honestly while upholding the values of NUST. The department is committed to ensuring the utilisation of innovative instructional methodologies and relevant digital technologies commensurate with ever-changing educational landscape. In addition, it aims to produce STEM classroom practitioners who are internationally recognised. Our very able and dedicated staff are committed to ensuring that each student achieves his or her full potential.
The department through its high quality staff, mandates itself to bring up creative, enthusiastic and innovative teachers who will adapt to all school environments having an attitude of leaving no leaner behind in their teaching. The department therefore, in its training equips teachers, whose role as educators is to nurture, direct, motivate, and encourage life-long learning to all students, with cross-cutting methodologies that are tailored to address specific learner needs. The department ensures that trained teachers deliver quality teaching by assessing their application of pedagogic knowledge and subject matter in classroom instruction during teaching practice and written and practical assignments and examinations.
