The Department of Surgery and Anaesthetics is one of the departments recently carved out of what was then the Division of Clinical Practice and Patient Care in the Faculty of Medicine at the NUST. It is a strong network of faculty and learners and traverses 2 of the major affiliated hospitals in Bulawayo i.e. The Mpilo Central Hospital and The United Bulawayo Hospital. The Department is currently in its nascent stages with expectations for expansion and growth in the near future. We have at the moment a complement of 8 full-time faculty complemented by at least 8 part-time lecturers. We as a department are responsible for surgical teaching (in all specialties of Surgery and Anaesthesia) to the undergraduate medical students in the 4^th year and the exit year in year six. Our surgical teaching is designed to complement those of the other clinical disciplines to produce a well-rounded general-duty medical officer with sufficient knowledge and skills to be able to occupy and acquit with distinction the office of an intern in Surgery. The products of our training program should also have sufficient knowledge and skills for future progress in surgery if they so choose.

Our vision is to be adjudged using the well-established traditional metrics as a recognized center for surgical training nationally, the subcontinent, continental, and ultimately globally.
