National University of Science and Technology (NUST)’s sports team has presented four trophies to the Vice-Chancellor following their participation at the annual Southern African University Staff Sports Association (SAUSSA) games. The sports fiesta hosted by Chinhoyi University of Technology took place in December 2019.
Raising the bar higher, the men’s volleyball team scooped a gold medal after thrashing University of Limpopo, University of Fort Hare and University of Eswatini in the group stages. They also performed very well in the semi-finals where they were competing against eight teams, after which they faced University of Fort Hare again in the finals attaining the first position. Team NUST went further and clinched bronze medals in 100, 200, 800 and 1000 meters athletics, Darts and women’s volleyball.
Nineteen universities drawn from Namibia, Zambia, Botswana, Lesotho, Swaziland, South Africa and Zimbabwe participated in the 2019 games with Zimbabwe playing host to the SADC countries.
The team’s captain, Chaswika Mate appreciated the support the team got from NUST in facilitating their travel for the games. He added that they have begun preparing for the 2020 games which will be held in Botswana.
“I hope that we will continue receiving the same support even in years to come and I encourage other staff members to join the team.” Said Mate.
NUST’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Mqhele Dlodlo described the performance by the team as splendid adding that they have become heroes and heroines for representing NUST and the nation so well.
