UNDERGRADUATE AND POSTGRADUATE PROGRAMMES  2019 ACADEMIC YEAR 

 

FACULTY OF APPLIED SCIENCES

 

Master of Science Degree in Eco-Tourism and Biodiversity Conservation – (Block Release) 

The part-time Master of Science programme aims at providing a holistic approach to ecotourism and natural resources management by producing persons with abilities to develop and integrate ecotourism with biodiversity conservation in an environmentally and socially sustainable manner.  Emphasis is placed on producing post-graduates with advanced knowledge and practical skills to become major stake holders in the growing eco-tourism industry and in sustainable environmental management.  The programme shall run over a period of 24 months and is offered in four semesters. 

Entry Requirements 

  • Hold a minimum of Lower Second Class (2.2) Honours Degree in Forest Resources and Wildlife Management, Animal Science, Natural Resources Management or any relevant science degree.
  • Relevant work experience and professional qualifications in eco-tourism, strategic marketing and business management will be an added advantage.

 

FACULTY OF COMMERCE

 

UNDERGRADUATE BLOCK RELEASE PROGRAMMES: 2019 ACADEMIC YEAR                       

Bachelor of Commerce Honours Degree Programme in Accounting: Block Release: Department of Accounting

 Entry Requirements

Candidates must have at least 2 ‘A’ level passes in Accounting and any one of the following subjects at ‘A’ level:  Mathematics, Economics and Business Studies.

 

Bachelor of Commerce Honours Degree Programme in Marketing: Block Release:- Department of Marketing 

Entry Requirements 

Candidates must have at least 2 ‘A’ level passes in Business Studies and any one subject at ‘A’ level. 

Bachelor of Commerce Honours Degree in Risk Management and Insurance – Block Release, Part time 5-8 pm including weekends (HARARE)

Entry Requirements 

  1. 5 O’ level passes including English and Mathematics
  2. At least 2 ‘A’ level passes in Economics or Mathematics and any other Commercial subjects at ‘A’ level.
  3. Applicants without the appropriate A’ level qualifications for entry but who have professional qualifications from institutions such as the Insurance Institute of Zimbabwe, Insurance Institute of South Africa, Chartered Insurance Institute (UK), Institute of Risk Management (UK) or Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (UK) as well as relevant working experience and who satisfy the University and the Department of their ability to complete the degree study programme satisfactorily, will be considered for study.

 

Bachelor of Commerce Honours Degree in Finance (Harare Evening Classes including weekends) 

Entry Requirements

 At least 5 ‘O’ level passes, including English and Mathematics, plus at least 2 ‘A’ level passes in Economics, Accounting and Mathematics and any other commercial subject at ‘A’ level.

5 ‘O’ level passes, including English and Mathematics, plus a relevant commercial diploma from an accredited institution, and relevant working experience

 

 POSTGRADUATE PROGRAMMES: 2019 ACADEMIC YEAR

 

Master of Science Degree in Accounting and Finance 

For this TWO-YEAR programme, classes run during weekends (Friday, Saturday and Sunday) and on public holidays only.  

To be admitted into the programme: 

  • Candidates must have a good honours degree in Accounting with a minimum pass of at least 2.2.
  • Candidates must have a thorough knowledge of Financial Reporting, Advanced Financial Accounting, Financial Analysis and Advanced Taxation
  • Professional qualifications such as ACCA, CIMA, CIS will be an added advantage.

 

Master of Science Degree in Banking and Financial Economics: 

(BULAWAYO COHORT AND HARARE COHORT – WEEKEND SCHOOL)

For this TWO-YEAR programme, classes run during weekends (Friday, Saturday and Sunday) and on public holidays only. 

To be considered for admission into the programme, candidates must have a good honours degree in Banking, Finance, Economics or their equivalents.  Thorough knowledge of financial markets will be an added advantage.

 

Master of Science Degree in Financial Engineering

[BULAWAYO AND HARARE BLOCK RELEASE]

This is a two-year, Part-Time (block-release) Degree Programme.  It is a typical quantitative finance discipline, which makes extensive use of computational approaches to the design and evaluation of financial claims.  To be considered for admission into the programme:

  • Candidates should have an appropriate Bachelors (Honours) Degree with at least a Lower Second Division, with a content in Finance, Risk and Insurance, Actuarial science, Quantitative Social Science, Applied Mathematics, Operations Research, Statistics, Computer Science, Applied Physics, Engineering, or related content from an accredited university/institution.
  • Preference will be given to applicants with a strong mathematical background.

NB: Lectures will be conducted on block release in both Bulawayo and Harare.

 

Master of Science Degree in Fiscal Studies

[BULAWAYO AND HARARE BLOCK RELEASE]

This is a two-year, Part-Time (block-release) Degree Programme.  To be considered for admission into the programme:

  • Candidates should normally hold a good honours degree in a commercial field, specifically; Fiscal Studies, Public Finance, Public Economics, Customs, Taxation, Economics, Finance, Accounting, Business Studies, Commerce, or their equivalents;

OR

  • A Bachelors degree in any discipline plus extensive relevant experience or an acceptable postgraduate diploma or professional qualifications from an accredited university/institution with a Fiscal Studies, Public Finance, Public Economics, Customs, Taxation, Business, Finance, Economics, Accounting, or Commerce -related content.

NB:     Lectures will be conducted on block release in both Bulawayo and Harare.

 

Master of Science Degree in Marketing

[HARARE: BLOCK- RELEASE]

[BULAWAYO: BLOCK- RELEASE AND EVENING]

This is a two year, Part-Time (Block-Release) / Evening Degree Programme:

To be considered for admission into the programme Candidates should possess:

  • A good honours degree or equivalent from a recognized University in any business related field. The MSc programme is not intended as an introductory course in Marketing.  Therefore to be considered for admission, a candidate should have completed in their prerequisite degree, in the following courses:
  • Principles of Marketing
  • Principles of Management
  • Principles of Economics

and any of the following: 

  • Business Finance, Statistics, Principles of Accounting, Quantitative Analysis for Business, Marketing Research

NB: Specify on your application form whether you prefer Bulawayo or Harare

BULAWAYO EVENING: Lessons will be run everyday of the week, from Monday to Friday from 1715 hrs to 2015 hrs, Saturday and Sunday 0800hrs to 1700hrs.  Registration dates will be announced in due course.  Lectures will be conducted at the main campus.

BULAWAYO BLOCK-RELEASE: Lessons will be run on a continuous 3 week block-release basis Monday to Sunday from 0800 hrs to 1700 hrs.  Registration dates will be announced in due course.  Lectures will be conducted at the main campus.

HARARE BLOCK-RELEASE: Lessons will be run on a continuous 3 week block-release basis.  Registration will be on a date to be announced at the NUST Harare Office - 40 Samora Machel Avenue St Andrews House, Harare.

 

Master of Science (MSc) in Risk Management and Insurance [Block-Release Part Time] 

This is a two-year, part-time (block-release) Postgraduate degree programme. Applicants      can apply for either Bulawayo or Harare Cohort, and therefore should specify on the the application forms

Entry requirements

To be considered for admission a candidate must:

  • Hold a good honours degree or equivalent, preferably Lower Second Class (2.2) or better from a recognised university in any business related field. In addition, the candidate must have thorough knowledge of insurance and/or risk management disciplines, or
  • Hold a general degree or equivalent, preferably Lower Second Class (2.2) or better, from a recognised university, coupled with a professional qualification in insurance and/or risk management from recognised institution. Associates or holders of advanced diplomas from internationally recognised institutions such as The Insurance Institute of Zimbabwe (IIZ) and The Insurance Institute of South Africa (IISA) with at least three (3) years of working experience at supervisory or management level will also be considered. Applicants holding these professional qualifications must show proof of having the final level of the qualification`s examination(s) to be admitted into the MSc Risk Management and Insurance programme.

 

INSTITUTE OF DEVELOPMENT STUDIES 

Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for the following block-release programmes:

 DIPLOMA IN DEVELOPMENT STUDIES – 14 MONTHS

DIPLOMA IN DISASTER MANAGEMENT – 14 MONTHS

 Entry requirements for 1 and 2 

  • Applicants must have obtained at least five subjects at Ordinary Level including English Language and Mathematics with grade C or better.
  • Applicants without “O” Level Mathematics will be required to undertake a compulsory Mathematics access course before admission into the programme.
  • Work experience in development-related or disaster-related field will be an added advantage.

 

MASTER OF SCIENCE IN DEVELOPMENT STUDIES – 2 YEARS

Available Both In Bulawayo And Harare.

 Entry requirements 

  • Applicants should normally hold an Honours Degree in Development Studies   or equivalent from a recognized university.

OR

  • A relevant Bachelor’s degree in Social Science or any other discipline from a  recognized university.
  •  Relevant work experience in the field of development or equivalent will be advantage.
  • Shortlisted candidates for admission may be interviewed as part of the selection process.

 

MASTER OF SCIENCE IN DISASTER MANAGEMENT – 2 YEARS

Available Both In Bulawayo And Harare. 

Entry requirements 

  • Applicants should normally hold an Honours Degree in Disaster Management or equivalent from a recognized university.

OR

  • A relevant Bachelor’s degree in Social Science or any other discipline from a recognized university.
  • Relevant work experience in the field of disaster risk and emergence management or equivalent will be an added advantage.
  • Shortlisted candidates for admission may be interviewed as part of the selection process.

 

FACULTY OF THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT 

 

Bachelor of Quantity Surveying Honours Degree: (Harare Cohort Block) 

Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for admission into the Bachelor of Quantity Surveying Honours Degree.  This is a four year undergraduate degree programme running everyday in the evenings and weekends

Entry Requirements 

Applicants much meet the following requirements: 

  • Have at least five Ordinary Level passes including English Language and Mathematics
  • A National Diploma in Quantity Surveying or at least a pass at A level in Mathematics or Physics and any other subject approved by the University.
  • Relevant working experience will be an added advantage. 

 

FACULTY OF INDUSTRIAL TECHNOLOGY 

 

Master of Engineering Degree (Part Time):-Department of Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering 

             (a)  Master of Engineering in Manufacturing Systems and Operations Management

             (b)  Master of Engineering in Manufacturing Engineering and Operations Management

            Entry Requirements

  • The normal entry requirements is a Bachelor’s Honours Degree in Industrial, Manufacturing, Production, or Mechanical Engineering.
  • In some cases, qualifications deemed to be equivalent to the honours award are accepted.
  • Preference will be given to candidates who have at least two years industrial experience.
  • Shortlisted candidates may be interviewed.

 Candidates must indicate which option (a) or (b) and the Cohort (BULAWAYO or HARARE) they are applying for.

 Bulawayo Cohort (Day Time Block Release) 

Day time class blocks, one block in a month per course, during the semester. The taught courses are offered in 10 Blocks spanning over three semesters and a dissertation during the 4th (last) semester.

 Harare Cohort (Evening and Weekend Day Time School) 

Week Evening and Weekend Day Time School. The taught courses are offered in 10 Blocks spanning over three semeters and a dissertation during the 4th (last) semester.  A Block runs during day time at weekends and evenings during the week, one block in a month per course. Expected commencement date for the Master of Engineering Programme Classes for the 2019/2020 Academic Year is First Week of July 2019.

 

 

FACULTY OF MEDICINE 

 

Bachelor of Science Honours Degree in Midwifery (Block-Release) 

Entry requirements 

To be eligible for admission the candidate must: 

  • Have at least 5 ‘O’ Level passes including English, Mathematics and a Science subject (Biology, Chemistry or Physics).
  • An ‘A’ Level qualification will be an added advantage.
  • Have a midwifery qualification (Registered General Nurse with a Diploma in Midwifery or a Registered Midwife with a Diploma Certificate).
  • Be registered with the Nurses Council of Zimbabwe and have a current Practising Certificate.
  • Have at least 2 years work experience post midwifery qualification. 

Duration of the Programme 

The duration shall be 3 years on a four-week block release instruction sessions in each semester adding up to a total of six (6) semesters. 

N.B: Admission into the above block-release programmes will be subject to adequate numbers of applicants qualifying to make a class 

 

Master of Science Degree in Midwifery Education: - Division of Social Medical Sciences (Full-time) 

Applicants are invited for admission into the above eighteen months (full time) Degree Programme.  To be considered for admission into the programme applicants should hold the following:

  •  An undergraduate degree in nursing or related field with a minimum of a 2.2 degree class.
  •  A Midwifery qualification (Diploma or higher).
  •  Current registration and practicing certificates with the Nurses Council of Zimbabwe.
  •  Minimum of one year working experience in a midwifery setting.

  • Clothing, Textile and Fashion Design
  • Design and Technology
  • Possession of a relevant ‘A’ Level subject will be a clear advantage.

 

Bachelor of Science Education (Honours) Degree (BScEd Hons) (Block Release)

The programme targets diploma holding non-graduate secondary school teachers and related personnel in the field of education who meet the requirements for admission by special entry into the above programme. Applicants must be employed as science, technology and mathematics teachers in secondary schools, colleges or related organisations at the time of applying.  The three-year programme is offered on block release during school holidays, starting in August. 

Entry requirements 

  • Applicants must have at least 5 ‘O’ Level subject passes including English Language and Mathematics, and
  • Applicants must be holders of a recognised secondary school teaching diploma in any of the following subjects:
  • Accounting and Business Studies
  • Biology
  • Chemistry
  • Computer Science

  • Applicants with a Primary School teaching qualification must also have a pass at A level in the intended subject of study.

Postgraduate Diploma in Science and Technology Education (PGDSTE) 

Applications are invited from graduate secondary school teachers in selected subject areas wishing to enrol for the 18-month block release programme for teachers and education personnel in Science, Technical or Commercial subjects taught in the Secondary Schools or Colleges.

 Entry requirements 

  1. A relevant bachelors degree from a recognized university
  2. Be currently teaching in schools, colleges or related institutions 

 

Postgraduate Diploma in Higher Education (PGDHE) 

Applications are invited from qualified candidates wishing to enrol for the one-year block release programme for higher and tertiary education personnel in Science, Technical or Commercial subject teaching areas. 

Entry requirements 

  1. A minimum of a relevant and approved first degree, and
  2. Be currently working in higher and tertiary education institutions or related organizations.
