ACADEMIC POSTS

 

POST:  DIRECTOR (RESEARCH AND INTERNATIONALISATION) (1 POST) 

DEPARTMENT: VICE CHANCELLOR’S OFFICE

The University seeks a visionary, creative and collaborative Director with demonstrated success and proven effectiveness in providing support for improving research quality, quantity and impact; as well as developing and facilitating collaborations with other universities regionally and internationally.

Reporting to the Pro Vice Chancellor, Research and Academic Affairs, the Director will be a highly motivated individual with extensive research knowledge and experience, a recognized thought-leader with strong senior management experience who will continue the transformation and delivery of the University’s key research deliverables that meet the requirements of the relevant regulations, legislation and guidelines that inform research. The appointment is for a period of four years, with the possibility of renewal based on performance.  

KEY RESULT AREAS   

The Director is expected to carry out the following key responsibilities:-   

  • Design, develop and review academic research and innovation strategic plans, policies, procedures and systems in line with the NUST Strategic Plan, national imperatives and international best practice.
  • Introduce an enhanced research support and management structure that can deliver the strategic plans with a coherent and effective approach.
  • Identify and exploit alternative sources of research funding.
  • Develop a focused University wide interdisciplinary research culture and agenda.
  • Deliver and disseminate impactful research and introduce research mentorship programmes for junior academic staff and early career researchers.
  • Identify research output so as to encourage entrepreneurship and commercialization.
  • Provide leadership on the internationalization of research activity at NUST with institutions within the SADC region and abroad. 

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE 

Applicants must have an earned PhD Degree with at least five (5) years’ research and research leadership experience with evidence of a proven track record of research excellence and grantsmanship.  Attainment of Associate Professorship or full Professorship, from a recognized university, based on research publications and outputs will be a requirement.  

 

POST: LECTURESHIP/SENIOR LECTURESHIP/ASSOCIATE PROFESSORSHIP (2 POSTS)

 

FACULTY:  COMMERCE 

DEPARTMENT: INSURANCE AND ACTUARIAL SCIENCE 

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE 

 Post A:  Quantitative Analysis for Business 

Applicants must hold a PhD Degree in Operations Research, Mathematics, Statistics and Actuarial Science or equivalent; or a PhD Degree in any business related field with a strong mathematical background.  Applicants who are holders of corresponding Master of Science Degrees must have at least 3 years’ University teaching experience. 

Post A:  Actuarial Science 

Applicants must hold a PhD Degree in Actuarial Science and an Honours Degree in Actuarial Science or a PhD Degree in Risk Management and / Insurance, Financial Engineering, Mathematical Modelling, Finance and Investments or equivalent and an Honours Degree in Actuarial Science.  Applicants who are holders of corresponding Master of Science Degrees must have at least 3 years’ University teaching experience.

 

POST: LECTURESHIP/SENIOR LECTURESHIP/ASSOCIATE PROFESSORSHIP (1 POST)

 FACULTY: ENGINEERING 

DEPARTMENT: INDUSTRIAL AND MANUFACTURING ENGINEERING 

 

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE 

Applicants must hold at least an MSc/MEng Degree in Electronic Engineering/Mechatronic Engineering/Electrical and Electronic Engineering/ Manufacturing Engineering or equivalent.  A PhD qualification in the respective area would be an added advantage.  The applicant must have a BEng/BSc/BTech honours degree in one of the fields of electrical Engineering/Electronic Engineering/Mechatronic Engineering/Electrical and Electronic Engineering (specialising in Instrumentation and Control Engineering) and have research interests in Industrial Instrumentation and Automation and Robotics.  The successful candidate will be expected to teach the following courses, at both undergraduate and postgraduate level: Industrial Instrumentation and Control, Computer Control of Manufacturing Systems, Automation and Robotics, Computer Applications and contribute to the supervision of student research.  He/She must also design and develop experiments and lead research in the area up of application. 

Applicants must be registered and licensed with the Zimbabwe Institute of Engineers (ZIE)/Engineering Council of Zimbabwe (ECZ)

 

POST: LECTURESHIP/SENIOR LECTURESHIP/ASSOCIATE PROFESSORSHIP (1 POST)

 FACULTY:  APPLIED SCIENCE 

DEPARTMENT: SPORTS SCIENCE AND COACHING 

 

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE 

Applicants  must hold a PhD in Sports Science and Coaching, Exercise Science, Biokinetics, Human Movement Studies or Sport, Leisure and Recreation Studies which will enable them to teach in at least any four of the following areas of Sports Science: Exercise Physiology and Biochemistry, Nutrition and Sports Nutrition, Health, Exercise and Sports Recreation, Human Physiology, Principles of Biochemistry, Anatomy, Functional Anatomy, Biomechanics, Sports Biokinetics, Sports Statistics, Psychology, Sports Psychology, Sports Management, Theory and Methodology of Physical Education, Sports History and Olympism, Advanced Sports Studies. 

They should also be able to teach at least two practical sport disciplines.  MSc holders in any of these disciplines may be considered for this post.

 

POST: STAFF DEVELOPMENT FELLOWSHIP (1 POST) 

FACULTY: APPLIED SCIENCE 

DEPARTMENT:SPORTS SCIENCE AND COACHING 

 

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE 

Aspiring candidates must possess an undergraduate degree with an overall Upper Second Degree Classification or better.  The degree must be in one of the following areas: Sports Science and Coaching; Exercise Science; Sports Medicine or Biological Sciences.  In addition, the candidates should have a sporting qualification obtained from an internationally recognised Organisation, have a track record of involvement in Sports at national and international level, be practising coaches or have at least two years Sports Science teaching experience at tertiary level. 

Applicants should be eligible for admission at a University offering Sports Science and Coaching at Higher Degree Programmes and should be willing to enrol on a split-site programme.  The successful candidate will be expected to register for an MPhil/MSc Degree in Sports Science and Coaching in any one of the following disciplines or any combination of the following: Exercise Physiology; Biomechanics Sports Psychology; Biokinetics, Sports Medicine, Sports Science and Sports Nutrition.

 

POST:  LECTURESHIP/SENIOR LECTURESHIP/ASSOCIATE PROFESSORSHIP (1 POST)

 FACULTY:  COMMUNICATION AND INFORMATION SCIENCE 

DEPARTMENT: LIBRARY AND INFORMATION SCIENCE

 

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE 

Applicants must hold at least a Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science or a closely related discipline.  Possession of a PhD would be an added advantage.  Candidates should have at least five (5) years experience in teaching or practice of Cataloguing, Classification and Metadata Description and Access.  The successful applicants will also be expected to guide and supervise undergraduate and postgraduate students.

 

NON - ACADEMIC POSTS

 

POST:  ACCOUNTANT/PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTANT (1 POST)

 DEPARTMENT:  BURSAR’S DEPARTMENT

 QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE 

Applicants should be in possession of a first Degree in Accounting, Finance, or recognised equivalent or an approved Accounting qualification.  In addition he/she should normally have eight (8) years relevant post qualification experience.  Possession of an MSc qualification would be an added advantage with normally two (2) years post-qualification experience. 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 

  • The duties will include the following among others:-
  • Maintenance, control and production of students’ year-end Accounts and other Financial statements;
  • Organisation and control of disbursement of Government loans, grants, sponsorships and bursaries paid to students,
  • Maintenance and control of other student related accounts and secretarial duties for relevant Committees.

 

POST: ADMINSTRATIVE ASSISTANT ( 2 POSTS) 

DEPARTMENT:  REGISTRAR’S  

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE 

Applicants must have a good Bachelor’s Degree from a reputable institution, preferably in Business Management, People Management or their equivalent.  A Master’s Degree in these areas will be an added advantage.  Good organisational skills, computer skills and public relations are very essential.  Five years experience in University operations systems and ability to work with minimum supervision are essential.   The successful candidates will be expected to work in any section of the University, but the initial appointments will be in the Faculty of Commerce and the Institute of Development Studies respectively. 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 

The successful candidates will be expected to:

  • Provide administrative support to the Faculty/Institute of Development Studies ensuring effectiveness, efficiency and professionalism.
  • Organise and service Faculty/Departmental Board Meetings
  • Work collaboratively and communicate effectively with students, Academic staff, non-teaching staff and external constituencies
  • Coordinate the Faculty/Institute’s activities and projects

 

POST: ASSISTANT INTERNAL AUDITOR ( 2 POSTS) 

DEPARTMENT: VICE CHANCELLOR’S   

SECTION: NTERNAL AUDIT 

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE 

Applicants must hold a Bachelor of Accountancy or Bachelor of Technology or Bachelor of Commerce Degree from a reputable institution or any other relevant auditing or accounting qualification.  Knowledge of IT audit would be an added advantage.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 

The successful candidate will be required to carry out the following duties:

  • Assisting in designing internal audit procedures and work programs
  • Identifying key areas of risk within the organisation and propose appropriate controls to mitigate the risks.
  • Ensuring that the University is complying with relevant laws and statutes.
  • Conduct internal audits to assess the adequacy, effectiveness and efficiency of the established internal controls and procedures.
  • Conduct special investigations and reviews as requested by management
  • Monitor the timely implementation of the management actions recommended in the audit reports.
  • Supervise Chief Audit Assistants.

 

 POST:  CHIEF AUDIT ASSISTANT ( 1 POST) 

DEPARTMENT: VICE CHANCELLOR’S 

SECTION: INTERNAL AUDIT 

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE 

Applicants must have 5 ‘O’ level passes including English Language with Grade C or better plus a Higher National Diploma in Accounting, IAC, or CIS Part C or equivalent and at least 5 years post qualification experience.  Possession of any other relevant auditing/accounting qualification or studying towards any relevant degree is advantageous. 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 

The successful candidate will be required to carry out the following duties:

  • Planning and preparation of audit programmes
  • Monitoring and verifying the adequacy, effectiveness and correct operation of the internal audit
  • Evaluating internalcontrol systems and making recommendations on how to improve
  • Assisting with the internal audit work involved
  • Performing any other audit function as assigned by the Assistant Internal Auditor.

 

POST:  TELECOMMUNICATIONS TECHNICIAN ( 2 POSTS) 

DEPARTMENT: INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY SERVICES 

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE 

Applicants must possess a Diploma in Telecommunications Information Technology/Electronics/Computer Science or equivalent and 3 years post-qualification experience or a Higher National Diploma in Telecommunications Information Technology/Electronics/Computer Science or equivalent and 2 years post-qualification experience or a Degree in Telecommunications or Information Technology with an emphasis to Telecommunications or equivalent and 1 year relevant experience in a Telecommunication environment with telephony services.  Applicants must have experience in maintenance of modem PABX systems from one of the leading brands, preferably Siemens.  

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 

The Incumbent will be responsible to the Director of Information and Communication Technology Service and reports to the Network Manager in the ICTS establishment.

The duties will include the following:-

  • Provide support and maintenance of telephone handsets whether cordless/wired, fax machines of different types and direct lines in the University.
  • Ability to work under pressure and in a large community of users.
  • Plan and implementation of latest telecommunications systems and resources that would result in efficient, cost effective and high quality communication for the University.
  • Carry out cabling and other means of connecting communications equipment as needed.
  • Maintain appropriate records of Telecommunication resources belonging to the University.

 

POST: COMPUTER HARDWARE TECHNICIAN ( 2 POSTS) 

DEPARTMENT: INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY SERVICES 

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE 

Applicants must possess a Higher National Diploma and 3 years post-qualification experience or a Degree in Information Technology/Computer Science/Electronics or equivalent and 1 year post-qualification experience. Applicants must have experience in both hardware and software maintenance, as well as possess intimate knowledge of Office Software applications and Microsoft Windows operating system. 

 DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 

The Incumbent will be responsible to the Director of Information and Communication Technology Service and reports to the User Support Manager in the ICTS establishment.

The duties will include the following:-

  • Installation of software and computer hardware for all user departments
  • Troubleshoot and resolve all software and hardware problems
  • Run disk utility programs to keep the hard disks in good order and workable space
  • Maintain, service and repair computer equipment
  • Implement security of hardware movement and software media
  • Ensure security of software by running anti-virus programs
  • Ensure that all software loaded on computers is licensed
  • Ensure the availability of resources to all users and support staff

 

POST:SOFTWARE SUPPORT TECHNICIAN ( 1 POST) 

DEPARTMENT: INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY SERVICES 

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE 

Applicants must possess a Higher National Diploma and 3 years post-qualification experience or a Degree in Information Technology/Computer Science/Electronics or equivalent and 1 year post-qualification experience. Applicants must have experience in Software maintenance as well as possess intimate knowledge of Microsoft Office Software applications, Java and or C, C++ programming, Apache, Linux and Open source Systems and Microsoft Windows Operating systems.  Knowledge of AutoCad, Apache, SQL, MySql, WinQS, Unix is essential. 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 

The incumbent will be responsible for assisting in the Information and Communication Service Department Helpdesk.  This will include the hardware and software technical support of computers running on the University Local Area Network.  The Incumbent will be responsible to the Director of Information and Communication Technology Service and reports to the Systems Manager in the ICTS establishment.

 

POST: TECHNICIAN ( 1 POST) 

FACULTY: ENGINEERING 

DEPARTMENT:  FIBRE AND POLYMER MATERIALS ENGINEERING 

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE 

Applicants must possess a Higher National Diploma in Textile Technology, Fibre and Polymer Materials Engineering and 3 years post-qualification experience or a Degree in Textile Technology, Fibre and Polymer Materials Engineering or Materials Engineering and have at least one year industrial work experience.  Supervisory experience will be an added advantage. 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 

The successful candidate will be required to carry out the following duties:

  • Supervising laboratory and workshop activities
  • Preparing equipment or chemicals for practicals
  • Supervising and training Technical Assistants
  • Assisting in the setting up of apparatus or preparation of chemicals for research
  • Calibrating and standardising equipment or apparatus
  • Managing inventory of consumables and advising on re-order levels
  • Procuring chemicals and equipment for the department
